Obsession becomes 2026’s biggest surprise as viral horror smash earns more than $400 million worldwide
A tiny independent horror movie has turned into one of the biggest success stories in modern film history.
Obsession, the feature debut from 26 year old filmmaker Curry Barker, has stunned Hollywood by earning more than $400 million worldwide after opening in theaters earlier this year. Made on a reported budget of just $750,000 to $1 million, the breakout hit is now being hailed as one of the most profitable movies ever made.
The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before arriving in theaters in May. Since then, strong word of mouth, especially among Gen Z horror fans, has fueled its remarkable box office run across the globe.
Industry analyst Bruce Nash, founder of The Numbers, said the film’s return on investment is unlike anything the industry has seen.
“In terms of the ratio between the worldwide box office and the production budget, Obsession is going to be the biggest success of all time,” Nash told AFP.
The movie has already surpassed the legendary The Blair Witch Project, which earned about $250 million worldwide after being made for around $600,000 in 1999. While blockbusters like Avatar, Titanic and Frozen brought in much larger totals overall, their production budgets were hundreds of times bigger.

Barker’s unexpected triumph has also outperformed another breakout horror sensation of 2026, Backrooms, directed by 20 year old Kane Parsons. That film has earned around $360 million worldwide from an estimated $10 million budget.
Together, the two movies have become clear signs that audiences are embracing a new generation of filmmakers who built their careers online before making the jump to Hollywood.
Oscar winning director Christopher Nolan praised the trend, calling the success of young creators making original films “very encouraging for the future of cinema.”
Before becoming one of Hollywood’s hottest new directors, Barker worked a series of everyday jobs while trying to break into the entertainment industry. After moving from Mobile, Alabama, to Los Angeles, he studied film, worked at Starbucks, flipped burgers, and even served as a COVID safety supervisor on film sets.

At the same time, he and longtime creative partner Cooper Tomlinson built an audience online through comedy sketches on TikTok and Instagram while posting horror shorts on their YouTube channel, That’s a Bad Idea.
Looking back on those years, Barker said creating content for social media taught him valuable storytelling skills.
“You figure out timing, you figure out tricks like how to get someone’s attention in the first three seconds,” he explained during an appearance on The Big Picture podcast.
The story of Obsession follows a young man who uses a magical charm called the One Wish Willow in hopes of making his longtime crush fall in love with him. What begins as a romantic fantasy quickly turns into a disturbing nightmare, exploring themes of obsession, consent and toxic relationships through increasingly terrifying twists.

The film became an even bigger win for Focus Features, which reportedly acquired worldwide distribution rights for $15 million after its festival premiere.
Following the film’s extraordinary success, Barker’s Hollywood career is moving quickly. He has already completed another feature titled Anything But Ghosts, which also stars Tomlinson, and has signed on to direct a new version of the 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Despite his rapid rise, Barker admitted he is still deciding which project should come next.
“I have a lot to weigh and that’s where the stress really comes from,” he recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know what to do next.”
