Bison Attack Survivor Carl McDaniel Reveals What Happened in Those Final Moments—Why He’s So Grateful for One Miraculous Thing

Bison Attack Survivor Speaks Out on Harrowing Yellowstone Encounter

The tourist whose terrifying encounter with a massive bison went viral is now sharing his story. Carl McDaniel, a 65‑year‑old grandfather, was tossed high into the air by the animal at Yellowstone National Park last Friday. He is recovering from a broken femur and says he is grateful to the strangers who rushed to his aid.

The Attack

Bison Attack Survivor Speaks out on Dangerous Encounter

McDaniel explained that he and his grandson were about 100 yards away from the bison, keeping a respectful distance and snapping a few photos. The animal initially showed no aggression. But when a truck drove by and honked its horn to move the bison, the sound agitated it. The bison charged, chasing McDaniel and his grandson through a wooded area.

In an effort to protect his grandson, McDaniel told him to run in one direction while he went the other to draw the animal away. The bison eventually caught up to McDaniel and hurled him into the air, breaking his femur in four places near his hip.

A Close Call

McDaniel recalled lying on the ground, unable to move, as the bison stood over him: “He could have stomped on me or gored me. He could have done almost anything to take my life — and he did not.”

Photographer Mike McLeod, who had been filming the encounter, stopped recording and, along with other good Samaritans, shouted at the bison to scare it off. Their quick action likely saved McDaniel’s life.

Recovery and Gratitude

McDaniel underwent surgery on Sunday and has begun physical therapy. He was able to stand the following day and is optimistic about his recovery. He expressed deep gratitude for the people who intervened: “I’m so thankful it wasn’t much worse.”

A Reminder of Wildlife Risks

The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of bison encounters in national parks. Despite tourists following guidelines and keeping their distance, sudden changes — like loud noises — can provoke dangerous reactions. McDaniel’s story serves as a reminder of both the risks of wildlife and the importance of community support in moments of crisis.
