A Phone Call That Turned Into a Standoff
Newly released bodycam footage is showing exactly what happened when The View co-host Sunny Hostin found out her 24-year-old son had been stopped by police on active Metro-North Railroad tracks — and how quickly she moved to intervene.
Caught in the Act
Gabriel Hostin, a 2025 Harvard University graduate, was detained just before 8 p.m. on June 16 near the tracks in New Rochelle after officers spotted him within the active right-of-way, in direct violation of posted no-trespassing signs. According to the footage, Gabriel told officers he had been out for a run and noticed the gate near the tracks was open.

Mom Steps In Immediately
Sunny Hostin was on the phone with her son at the moment he was stopped, and the bodycam captures her identifying herself to officers almost immediately, stating her name, her role as a co-host on The View, and her background as a former federal prosecutor. She continued advocating for her son once she arrived on scene in person, repeating to officers that he was a Harvard graduate with no criminal record who teaches fourth-grade geometry to kids in the South Bronx.

Pleading Her Case
Throughout the exchange, Hostin can be heard insisting the situation was an innocent mistake and that her son had never been in trouble before. Gabriel himself also attempted to negotiate with officers, at one point asking directly whether writing the citation was necessary and what would happen if they simply let it go. Officers responded firmly that it was, noting that where he had been standing on the tracks constituted an arrestable offense.

A Break Given, But Not a Full Pass
Despite the pushback, officers ultimately reduced the charge to a trespass violation rather than a more serious offense, citing his cooperation and the fact that he had been standing along the right-of-way rather than deeper within the track area. One officer acknowledged on camera that Gabriel didn’t appear to be a criminal, but explained that surveillance cameras throughout the area left them with little discretion in the matter.

What Comes Next
Gabriel Hostin is scheduled to appear in court in New Rochelle on July 31, with his mother, a former federal prosecutor herself, reportedly representing him in the case moving forward.
