Was Tom Jones Too Popular To Replace? The Performance That Made Fans Revolt

Sir Tom Jones’s performance of It’s Not Unusual on The Voice UK was meant to be a celebration of one of his best-known songs. Instead, it became an uncomfortable backdrop to the news that the singer would no longer return as a full-time coach.

For viewers watching the 86-year-old deliver the classic, the timing was difficult to ignore. The performance reminded audiences of the voice and stage presence that had made Jones a familiar part of the programme, just as his departure was becoming one of its biggest talking points.

Tom Jones becomes TV voice coach

The reaction was immediate enough to fuel a second debate: if Jones can still command a performance like that, why is he leaving the show?

Reports from the time captured fans praising his rendition and criticising ITV’s decision to remove him from the coaching panel. Some viewers threatened not to watch the programme without him, while others described him as an irreplaceable part of its identity. Those reactions reflect vocal fan sentiment, though they do not establish how the wider audience will respond to the new series.

The performance also landed at a particularly sensitive moment. Jones had publicly challenged the circumstances of his exit, saying he did not want to leave The Voice UK. He said ITV had made the decision and cited financial difficulties involving insurance as the reason given to him. The broadcaster’s public explanation focused on refreshing the show and introducing a new coaching lineup.

That difference has made it harder to frame the change as a simple farewell.

If Jones had announced his retirement, the performance might have been received as a nostalgic moment from a legendary singer preparing to move on. Instead, viewers were watching someone who had said he wanted to keep doing the job, while the programme was preparing to move forward without him.

The contrast is what gives the performance its significance. It was not proof that Jones should have been kept on the panel. A strong musical performance does not automatically demonstrate that someone is the best fit for a television format, and producers may have reasons for changing a lineup beyond a coach’s singing ability.

But it did remind viewers of something that can be overlooked when a broadcaster announces a refresh: the qualities that make a performer valuable are not always easy to replace.

Jones brings decades of experience as a recording artist and live performer. His musical authority is part of what he offers contestants, and his familiar presence gives long-time viewers a connection to the programme’s history. A new coach may bring a different audience, fresh chemistry and contemporary industry knowledge, but those qualities do not necessarily reproduce what Jones contributed.

The comparison is especially relevant because ITV is making several changes at once. Cheryl and Aitch are joining returning coaches Kelly Rowland and will.i.am for the 2027 series, while Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon are taking over presenting duties. The show is not simply replacing one coach; it is introducing a substantially different on-screen team.

That gives the new lineup an opportunity to establish its own identity. It also raises the stakes. Viewers who are already unhappy about Jones’s exit may be more inclined to scrutinise the new coaches and compare their performances with the person who occupied the chair before them.

Jones’s own response has added to that tension. His remark that there is never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who is still good at his job became a headline in its own right. Reports later said he had also rejected an offer to return in a reduced guest role, suggesting that a brief appearance was not what he wanted from the programme.

The question, then, is not whether It’s Not Unusual was a good performance. It is why that performance became part of the argument over his future.

For fans, it offered a timely reminder of what they believe the show is losing. For ITV, the challenge is to demonstrate that the programme can remain compelling with a new panel and a different presenting team.

There is no evidence yet that Jones’s exit will damage the show’s ratings or that the new lineup will disappoint. Those judgments will have to wait until the next series airs.

But the timing has made the transition harder to sell as an uncomplicated upgrade. ITV has announced a fresh start, while a performance from the departing coach has given viewers a reason to look backward.

That may be the most awkward part of the whole story: just as the programme asks its audience to embrace a new era, Tom Jones has reminded them why they became attached to the old one.
