Sir Tom Jones continued to entertain fans during his Surrounded By Time tour in October 2022, delivering a performance at California’s YouTube Theater despite ongoing hip problems that affected his mobility.

The 82-year-old singer performed many of his greatest hits during the concert on October 4, spending most of the show seated. He was also seen holding onto a cane to help him stand at certain points throughout the evening.

Although his mobility appeared to be limited, Jones continued performing for the audience, demonstrating that his physical discomfort had not stopped him from taking the stage.

The concert came just weeks after Jones revealed that he needed another hip replacement. The legendary performer had already undergone surgery on his left hip in 2017, but explained in September 2022 that his right hip now required attention.

Fans had raised concerns earlier that year after seeing him use a cane. However, Jones moved to reassure them that his overall health remained good and that his difficulties were primarily related to the physical effects of ageing and years of performing.

Speaking to ITV, the singer explained that he was fortunate not to be dealing with any debilitating illnesses.

“I’m lucky I’m in good health, I’ve got nothing wrong with me,” he said.

“I’ve got no debilitating illnesses that bother me, it’s just wear and tear, that’s about the only thing that has happened to me.”

Jones also emphasized that his voice remained strong, offering reassurance to fans concerned about his ability to continue performing.

“My voice is still in great shape, everything is ticking away nicely,” he added.

A Tour That Keeps the Singer on Stage

At the time, Jones was travelling across the United States as part of his Surrounded By Time tour. The shows gave audiences the opportunity to hear the veteran singer perform his best-known songs, even as he adapted his stage routine to accommodate his hip problems.

His decision to perform largely while seated allowed him to continue the concert while prioritizing his comfort. Photographs from the event showed him using his cane for support and performing alongside his band.

Despite the physical challenges, Jones showed no indication at the time that he intended to retire from performing. His continued appearances reflected his determination to remain connected with audiences while managing the effects of age and wear and tear.
