Many Heartstopper fans were surprised to see a different actress playing Sarah Nelson in Heartstopper Forever. Now, creator Alice Oseman has revealed why Olivia Colman did not return for the Netflix finale.
Colman became one of the show’s most beloved cast members after playing Nick Nelson’s supportive mother during the first two seasons. Her performance, especially throughout Nick’s coming out journey, made Sarah a fan favorite and one of the series’ most loved parents.
However, the Academy Award winner was unable to return for Heartstopper Forever because of scheduling conflicts. Colman had previously shared that she simply could not fit the movie into her busy filming schedule and admitted she was disappointed to miss the final chapter of the story.
Speaking to Netflix Tudum, Oseman explained that removing Sarah from the movie was never really an option.

Although the writers adjusted the story during season 3 to account for Colman’s absence, Oseman said Sarah remained an essential part of Nick’s emotional journey in the finale. Leaving the character out completely would not have felt right.
Instead, the production made the difficult decision to recast the role.
Oseman also took the opportunity to thank Colman for everything she brought to the series, praising the warmth and kindness she gave to Sarah throughout the first two seasons.
Anna Maxwell Martin stepped into the role for Heartstopper Forever. Best known for her work in Line of Duty and other British dramas, she takes over as Nick’s mother in the film’s emotional final chapter.

According to Oseman, Maxwell Martin captured the same caring, calm, and supportive spirit that fans associate with Sarah Nelson. She also praised the actress’ on screen chemistry with Kit Connor, saying their scenes together became some of her favorites during filming.
Heartstopper Forever serves as the final installment of Netflix’s adaptation of Alice Oseman’s bestselling graphic novels, bringing Nick and Charlie’s coming of age romance to an emotional and hopeful conclusion.
