A Nightmare on the Streets of Manhattan
Two months after Donika Gocaj plunged into an uncovered, steaming manhole in Manhattan and lost her life, her grieving family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Con Edison, alleging the utility company’s negligence directly caused the tragedy that also left her longtime partner severely injured.
The Moment Everything Went Wrong
According to the family’s attorney, Gocaj, 56, had stepped out of her vehicle near East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue on the night of May 18 to meet her boyfriend, Jashar “Jack” Kameraj, between work shifts. Without warning, she fell into an open manhole that had gone uncovered. Witnesses say she could be heard screaming that she was dying as Kameraj attempted to climb down and pull her out, while terrified bystanders ran through the streets searching for a ladder.

A Desperate but Futile Rescue Effort
Despite the frantic efforts of those nearby, Gocaj could not be saved in time. She ultimately died from severe scald burns, thermal inhalation injuries, and blunt force trauma sustained while trapped inside the hole. The scene was described by the family’s attorney as chaotic, with onlookers able to see and hear her but powerless to physically reach her in time.
Her Partner Left Bedridden
Kameraj, who tried to rescue Gocaj, suffered serious inhalation injuries and burns of his own during the attempt, and remains bedridden as a result. Attorneys representing the family say the couple were exceptionally close, describing Gocaj as essentially family to Kameraj, with the two seeing each other nearly every day.

A Pattern of Neglect, Attorneys Allege
The lawsuit claims Con Edison was aware that its manhole covers could become dislodged due to vehicle traffic, yet failed to implement adequate safety measures to prevent it. A representative for the utility company has stated that a passing truck appears to have dislodged the cover roughly 15 minutes before Gocaj arrived at the scene. Attorneys argue that regardless of what dislodged it, responsibility falls on Con Edison for failing to properly secure it. They also cite more than 3,200 manhole-related complaints filed with the city in just a two-month period, arguing the incident reflects a broader, systemic failure rather than an isolated accident.

What the Family Is Demanding
Gocaj’s attorneys are calling for stronger locking systems on manholes, real-time monitoring to detect displaced covers, and secondary safety devices designed to prevent falls. The family is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages, while Con Edison has stated it cannot comment on specific allegations due to the pending litigation, though it extended condolences to the family.

Remembering a Devoted Mother
Gocaj’s attorney described her as a woman who raised two children alone after losing her husband two decades earlier, working demanding jobs to provide her family with a stable home and education. Her loved ones say no settlement can replace what was lost, but hope the lawsuit prevents a similar tragedy from happening again.
