92-year-old Oscar-winning star Shani Wallis finally speaks out after Britain’s Got Talent cut her audition from the main show, as furious fans rush to support her

Veteran stage and screen star Shani Wallis has spoken out after fans were left stunned when her audition for Britain’s Got Talent failed to appear in the programme’s main broadcast — a move some viewers have branded “so mean.”

The 92-year-old performer, best known for playing Nancy in the Oscar-winning musical film Oliver!, took to the stage during the current series of the ITV talent show, where she performed the emotional ballad As Long As He Needs Me — a song famously associated with her role in the beloved film.

Despite impressing the judging panel — including Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, KSI and Amanda Holden — Wallis’ audition did not make it into the main episode. Instead, viewers discovered her performance only on the spin-off segment known as the “Unseen Auditions,” leaving many fans puzzled about why the moment had been cut from the flagship show.

Judges stunned by surprise reveal

During the audition, the judges initially had no idea who the elegant performer standing before them was. Wallis casually told them she had previously stood on the same stage decades earlier.

“I was here on this stage 70 years ago,” she remarked.

Judge Alesha Dixon responded in disbelief: “You don’t even look 70.”

Wallis then delivered the surprise revelation: she was the female star of the Academy Award-winning motion picture Oliver! — prompting an instant reaction from the panel.

“Nancy!” Dixon exclaimed, recognizing the iconic character. Amanda Holden immediately jumped to her feet in shock, declaring: “Oh my God — you were Nancy! I know who you are!”

The audition ended with the judges sending the legendary performer through to the next round, making the absence of the moment from the main broadcast even more surprising to fans.

Viewers question the decision

Following the episode, social media quickly filled with confused reactions from viewers who felt Wallis’ performance deserved a prominent place in the main programme.

One fan asked bluntly online: “Why did they cut her??”

Another wrote that their family had been “beyond shocked,” explaining that they were huge fans of Oliver! and couldn’t understand why the moment only appeared in the additional ITVX mini-episodes.

Others echoed the sentiment, with one post on X questioning: “Why was Shani Wallis demoted to the Unseen auditions? She is an icon and sang brilliantly.”

Another viewer added: “Why didn’t they show Nancy from Oliver on the main show?”

Fans continue to celebrate the star

Despite the controversy, Wallis has received an outpouring of admiration from longtime fans who praised both her legacy and her enduring voice.

One admirer wrote:

“How amazing you are Shani — your voice is still incredible and what a great actress you are.”

Another called her a “national treasure,” while others simply celebrated the return of the legendary performer with messages such as “Go Shani!” and “Legend Shani looking good.”

One particularly heartfelt comment recalled how a chance meeting with Wallis decades ago changed the fan’s life. The admirer said they met her while working at a drugstore in California in 1969 and were encouraged by the star to pursue theatre work in New York — advice they say led to a “spectacular” career path.

Wallis herself responded to the wave of support with a cheerful message:

“Thank you everyone. Life is just a bowl of cherries.”

A lasting legacy

The film Oliver! — directed by Carol Reed — remains one of the most celebrated movie musicals in history, winning six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Wallis’ performance as Nancy has long been regarded as one of the film’s most memorable roles.

While ITV has yet to comment on why her audition appeared only in the “Unseen Auditions” segment, many viewers believe the legendary star deserved a moment in the spotlight on the main stage.

For fans, however, the performance itself was enough — a reminder that even after decades in show business, Shani Wallis still has the power to captivate an audience.
