Cause of Death Revealed for Big Sur Hiker Joanna Shields
Authorities have released new findings in the mysterious case of Joanna Ruth Shields, the 37‑year‑old Carlsbad native found dead and partially unclothed in Big Sur earlier this year.
Autopsy Results
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Shields died of “probable alcohol withdrawal seizures due to chronic alcohol use disorder.” Officials ruled her death natural, with no evidence of homicide or criminal activity.
Her body was discovered April 9 along Pine Ridge Trail near Sykes Hot Springs. Investigators noted a superficial scalp laceration, abrasions, bruises, and insect activity, but none contributed to her death. Clothing and personal items were found nearby.
Mental Health Struggles
The coroner’s report revealed Shields had a history of bipolar disorder and alcoholism. Her sister told detectives she had suffered withdrawal seizures in the past. Around Thanksgiving 2024, she stopped taking prescribed psychiatric medications and instead used psilocybin and marijuana, leading to paranoia, delusions, eviction, and public incidents of disrobing.
She later sought treatment in Illinois before returning to California.
Family Reaction
Her sister Claudia Robinson described the loss as a “tragic event,” saying: “We’re all in different stages of grief as we attempt to process such a devastating blow. Joanna was a bright, radiant light… her absence will have a profound effect on countless numbers who encountered her beautiful spirit.”
Another sister added: “This is the saddest sadness I have ever known.”

Shields was remembered as an avid skater and industry professional. Jeff Anning, owner of Evolve Skateboards, said: “She just had so much energy. She was so passionate, so kind, and she was always putting other people first.”
