Celeste’s parents, Jesus Rivas and Mercedes Martinez, had attended every day of the hearing alongside their attorney, Patrick Steinfeld. But just before Deputy Medical Examiner Grant Ho took the stand, both parents left the courtroom, unable to endure further graphic evidence.

Autopsy Findings

Ho testified that Rivas’ body weighed only 71 pounds and was “markedly decomposed,” with trauma to her extremities. Her braces were identified during the exam. Prosecutors allege Burke stabbed the teen, mutilated her body, and concealed the remains in bags inside his Tesla.
