Prince Harry and Prince William have once again become the subject of public discussion after former royal butler Paul Burrell shared personal memories of the brothers’ childhood. Speaking in a recent interview, Burrell reflected on the years he spent working for Princess Diana and described the two princes as having noticeably different personalities from a young age.
Burrell served in the royal household for many years, first as a footman to Queen Elizabeth II before becoming Princess Diana’s butler. Since Diana’s death in 1997, he has frequently spoken publicly about his experiences with the royal family through interviews, television appearances and books. His latest comments offer another personal perspective on William and Harry during their childhood at Highgrove House.
According to Burrell, Prince Harry often displayed generosity in simple but memorable ways. He recalled that Harry would regularly give pocket money to Burrell’s sons when they visited the royal estate. Harry reportedly referred to British banknotes featuring Queen Elizabeth II by playful nicknames and enjoyed handing them over so the boys could save for something they wanted, such as a PlayStation.
Burrell described Harry as a “generous and sensitive boy,” suggesting that these small gestures reflected his naturally giving personality rather than an isolated act.
At the same time, Burrell emphasized that Prince William approached money differently. He said William was more careful and practical, preferring to save rather than spend freely. Burrell stressed that the difference did not make one brother better than the other, but instead illustrated two distinct personalities developing within the same family.
He also remembered seeing those differences during everyday life at Highgrove. According to Burrell, Harry would happily ride around the estate on his bicycle wearing jeans with holes in them before joining games of football with Burrell’s sons. William, meanwhile, often arrived neatly dressed and driving a small model Aston Martin toy car, reflecting a more polished and orderly nature.

These recollections have attracted attention because of the continuing public fascination with the relationship between the brothers. Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020, their relationship with the rest of the royal family has remained the subject of significant media coverage. Harry’s memoir Spare and several television interviews have further fueled public discussion about family tensions.
However, Burrell’s stories focus on a much earlier period, long before those disagreements became public. They paint a picture of two young boys growing up under extraordinary circumstances while displaying different temperaments that people around them could already recognize.

Burrell also noted that Princess Diana worked hard to treat both sons equally despite William’s future role as heir to the throne. While Harry later described himself as the “spare” in his memoir, Burrell suggested Diana tried to create as normal and balanced an upbringing as possible.
As with many recollections shared years after events occurred, Burrell’s comments represent his own memories and perspective. They cannot independently confirm exactly how the brothers behaved in every situation. Still, the anecdotes offer another glimpse into their childhood and remind readers that, despite their royal status, William and Harry also experienced the ordinary differences often seen between siblings.
