The United States is honoring Dolly Parton with an unusually extended tribute following her death, as American flags across the country are set to remain at half-staff for one full week.
President Donald Trump ordered the flags lowered nationwide after Parton died at 80 years old on Aug. 25, 2026. According to the White House, the tribute began at 6 p.m. on Aug. 26 and will continue until sunset on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The length of the tribute exceeds similar honors recently given to several prominent figures, including Pope Francis, Charlie Kirk and Lindsey Graham.

Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, Trump also ordered American flags to be lowered until sunset on the day of the pope’s interment. Francis was buried on April 26, 2025.
