Replacing a major character halfway through a season is always a challenge, but House of the Dragon pulled it off so smoothly that many viewers barely noticed the transition. The secret was surprisingly simple: the production cast the adult Rhaenyra Targaryen before searching for the younger version.

Emma D’Arcy, who plays the older Rhaenyra, was the first actor selected for the role. Once they were cast, casting director Kate Rhodes James used photos of D’Arcy as a teenager as the blueprint for finding someone who could convincingly portray a younger version of the same character.

That search ultimately led to Milly Alcock, whose striking resemblance to D’Arcy helped make one of television’s biggest recasts feel completely believable.

Season 1 follows Rhaenyra through several years of political turmoil inside House Targaryen. Alcock portrays the fiery teenage princess during the early episodes before Episode 6 jumps ahead roughly 10 years, introducing D’Arcy as an older, more battle hardened Rhaenyra. By then, she is a mother navigating court politics while continuing to fight for her claim to the Iron Throne in a kingdom determined to deny her power.

The transition works because the similarities between the two actors extend well beyond their appearance.

Both share comparable facial features, including their bone structure and eye shape. Combined with the signature silver blond Targaryen wigs, matching costumes and consistent makeup design, the physical resemblance creates a convincing sense that viewers are watching the same person at different stages of life.

The performances also complement each other. From their posture and facial expressions to the quiet confidence that defines Rhaenyra, both actors capture the same inner strength, allowing the character’s personality to remain consistent despite the time jump.

House of the Dragon used a similar approach for Alicent Hightower, with Emily Carey portraying the younger Alicent before Olivia Cooke took over following the decade long leap forward.

Time jump recasts often take viewers out of a story as audiences adjust to a completely new face. However, Rhaenyra’s transition has frequently been praised as one of television’s strongest examples of a successful recast because it relies on careful casting rather than digital effects.

Instead of using CGI or de-aging technology, the series created continuity through thoughtful casting choices and two performances that feel like different chapters of the same woman’s life rather than two separate interpretations of the character.
