A brief social media clip featuring Jessica Johanson has unexpectedly turned the Penn State Nittany Lions gymnast into an online talking point after the video rapidly went viral before being removed.
The 11-second clip, originally posted by the team’s official account on X, showed Johanson reacting after receiving a high score during a recent competition.

The post celebrated the performance with the caption noting her 9.875 score, but the short video quickly attracted attention for reasons unrelated to her gymnastics routine. Within hours, it had surged to around 1.8 million views and triggered a flood of direct messages and comments directed at the athlete.

Viewers began focusing on an unusual detail in the camera angle, which briefly shifted below Johanson’s waist. The unexpected framing led to a wave of online reactions, with some users leaving inappropriate comments about the moment. As the clip continued to spread, the team eventually removed the video from its account.

The sudden viral moment surprised many around the program, especially since Johanson is better known for her consistent performances on the mat rather than social media buzz. A graduate student and all-around competitor for Penn State, she has built a strong résumé during her collegiate career.

Johanson owns several impressive career marks, including a 9.9 on vault at the Big Five Meet and a 9.9 on floor during regional competition. She also posted a career-best all-around score of 39.350 at Auburn in 2023, helping the Nittany Lions record one of the highest team totals in program history.

Her success has extended beyond competition results. Johanson has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and has been recognized as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar while studying kinesiology at Penn State. Before college, she was a Level 10 national qualifier multiple times and placed fourth on bars at the 2021 Level 10 Nationals.

Despite the unexpected attention online, Johanson originally chose Penn State because of the culture within the gymnastics program. She has previously said the atmosphere and team spirit made it clear that the university was the right place to continue both her athletic and academic journey.
The viral clip has also coincided with a noticeable spike in her social media presence. Her Instagram following has climbed past 15,000, though it is unclear exactly how many new followers arrived after the video circulated.
