The latest episode of House of the Dragon season 3 delivers a long-awaited moment as Criston Cole meets his brutal end during the infamous Butcher’s Ball, but one small detail in his final scene adds a deeper emotional meaning to his death.

After spending the past episodes leading attacks against forces loyal to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Criston and his army fall into a deadly trap. What first appears to be a battlefield filled with dead soldiers turns out to be a carefully planned ambush, with enemy forces rising from the ground and launching a surprise attack.

Although Criston’s side manages to fight back at first, the larger army eventually surrounds them. Realizing there is no escape, Criston attempts to negotiate with Roderick Dustin and Oscar Tully, but both have grown tired of his brutal tactics and refuse to spare him.

Before his final moments, Criston removes a handkerchief from his sleeve and ties it around the handle of his sword. He then challenges his enemies to face him in combat.

However, before the duel can happen, Alysanne Blackwood fires three arrows at him, killing him instantly.

The episode ends with Criston lying dead on the battlefield, still holding onto the handkerchief as it moves in the wind.

The handkerchief belonged to Alicent Hightower

The small piece of fabric is not just a random object. It originally came from Alicent Hightower, and it carries a painful reminder of their complicated relationship.

Fans first saw the handkerchief in season 2, episode 3, “The Burning Mill.”

Before Criston left for war, Alicent gave him the item after he asked for her favor, hoping to carry her blessing with him into battle.

At the time, Criston and Alicent had secretly been involved in a relationship following the death of King Viserys I Targaryen. Although Alicent had become frustrated with Criston after he challenged her decisions on the Small Council, she still granted his request.

The handkerchief featured the letter “A” in elegant writing, symbolizing Alicent and the feelings Criston still carried for her.

Criston carried Alicent’s memory until the end

Throughout the battles that followed, Criston kept the handkerchief with him, even as his loyalty to King Aegon II Targaryen pushed him deeper into the violence of the Targaryen civil war.

By the time of the Butcher’s Ball, Criston had become a hardened warrior surrounded by betrayal, anger, and death. Yet the handkerchief represented something personal that remained untouched by the chaos around him.

Even in his final moments, when he knew death was approaching, Criston held onto the one thing connecting him to Alicent.

The show has not yet revealed how Alicent reacts after learning about Criston’s death, but that emotional fallout could become an important part of the remaining episodes.

With only two episodes left in House of the Dragon season 3, Criston Cole’s final scene adds another tragic layer to a story already filled with broken loyalties, lost love, and the devastating consequences of war.
