An Attack on a Pride Celebration
At least one person is dead and 16 others injured after a van driver with reported ties to Islamic extremist circles crashed into a crowd attending Berlin’s Christopher Street Day, the city’s major LGBTQ+ pride event, Saturday night.
How the Attack Unfolded
According to police, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. when a white van drove into Berlin’s Tiergarten park, along a route the pride march had passed earlier in the day, striking several people before colliding with a tree. Authorities are also investigating reports that some victims may have sustained stab wounds in addition to injuries from the vehicle, though officials cautioned it was too early to draw firm conclusions from those accounts.

The Search for the Suspect
Police identified the suspect as 21-year-old Abdul B., describing him as a known member of Islamic extremist circles in Berlin. As of Sunday morning, he had not been apprehended. Police spokesperson Florian Nath confirmed that the search for the suspect was continuing at full speed, with authorities asking witnesses to come forward with any video or photos taken at the scene.
A Community in Shock
Julian Meithig, who had been celebrating nearby at the Brandenburg Gate, described making his way toward the scene after learning something serious had happened, recalling the presence of numerous fire trucks and ambulances. He described the attack as a dark day for the community. The pride event, which typically draws hundreds of thousands of attendees to Berlin, was canceled roughly fifteen minutes after the attack as police flooded the area.

Support for Those Affected
City officials activated a crisis hotline to assist individuals unable to locate loved ones in the aftermath of the attack, as emergency responders continued treating the injured at the scene.
Berlin’s Mayor Responds
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as a brutal assault following what had been a peaceful and vibrant pride parade earlier in the day. He characterized the incident as an attack on the city’s free and cosmopolitan society, while expressing confidence that police and security authorities would work around the clock to investigate the incident fully.

An Ongoing Investigation
As the manhunt for the suspect continues, authorities have not yet released additional details about the motive behind the attack or the specific nature of injuries sustained by victims, with officials emphasizing that the investigation remains active and evolving.
