A Tragedy on the Highway
A Silicon Valley tech executive has been charged with murder following a horrific high-speed crash that killed a young mother and her one-year-old daughter in San Jose, California.
The Charges
Zachary Chernicky, 31, was arrested on July 13 and is now facing two counts of murder in connection with the December 2, 2025, crash that killed Ivana Balistreri, 29, and her daughter, Lilliana, who was just two weeks away from turning two. According to prosecutors, Chernicky was driving 142 mph just seconds before impact and remained at approximately 102 mph when his Tesla slammed into the family’s stopped Lexus SUV.
A Devastating Impact
Prosecutors say Balistreri’s vehicle was stopped in traffic at the time of the collision, which occurred at 10:45 a.m. in clear weather conditions. The force of the crash caused both her car and the vehicle in front of it to catch fire, with Balistreri and her daughter ultimately dying in the resulting blaze. A fourth vehicle was also damaged in the incident but was able to leave the scene under its own power.
Prosecutor Condemns the Driving
Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Marisa McKeown, who is prosecuting the case, didn’t mince words when describing the incident, stating plainly that driving at such extreme speeds naturally leads to fatal outcomes. She noted that the cause of Chernicky’s excessive speed remains unclear, and that he sustained only minor injuries in the crash.
A Father’s Desperate Attempt to Help
Dramatic video captured at the scene shows Balistreri’s fiancé and Lilliana’s father, Zack Martins, 33, frantically attempting to pull the mother and daughter from their burning vehicle while calling out to bystanders for help. Lilliana had been secured in a child safety seat directly behind her mother at the time of the crash.
A Family Left Devastated
Balistreri’s family has since described her as a kind and gentle person who never judged others and loved everyone around her wholeheartedly, expressing heartbreak over losing what they called two bright and innocent souls far too soon. An online fundraiser launched to support the family has since raised nearly $108,000 toward its $120,000 goal.
