Terrifying Surveillance Footage Shows Woman Shielding Child During Russian Strike in Ukraine
Newly released surveillance footage has captured the terrifying moment a woman shielded a child on a street in Sumy, Ukraine, just as Russian glide bombs struck the city on Saturday, July 11. The footage, which has since spread widely online, shows the instant a routine afternoon turned into a scene of panic and destruction.
What the Footage Shows
Multiple security cameras recorded the attack from different angles. One clip shows customers inside a coffee shop scrambling for the exits as the explosions shattered windows nearby. A second camera, positioned outside, captured pedestrians dropping to the ground and fleeing as blasts echoed through the area. In a separate clip reviewed by Worthy News, a woman is seen shielding a child on the street at the exact moment one of the explosions hit.
A Deadly Attack on a Crowded Area
According to Sumy Regional Military Administration head Oleh Hryhorov, Russian forces struck the city with guided glide bombs, and three men also died in the attack alongside a 13-year-old girl, with another victim later dying in the hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll to five. Regional authorities said 42 to 43 people were injured in total, with five described as being in serious condition. Regional police reported that the bombs hit a public transport stop, a busy roadway, and an infrastructure facility, causing widespread damage to nearby apartment buildings, vehicles, a coffee shop, and a gas station.

Part of a Wider Wave of Attacks
The strike on Sumy was not an isolated incident. The July 11 strike came during a broader wave of Russian attacks across the Sumy region that day, with 13 communities across the region coming under attack using guided aerial bombs, artillery and attack drones. Officials say the region has faced near-daily bombardment in recent months as Russian forces continue operations near the border.
A City Under Constant Threat
Sumy has become a recurring target throughout the war. On April 13, 2025, Russian missiles struck the city during Palm Sunday church services, killing at least 35 people and wounding 129. Residents say the constant threat of attack has reshaped daily life in the city, with ordinary spaces like cafes and bus stops becoming sites of sudden danger.
Political Fallout
The renewed violence has also coincided with political upheaval in Kyiv. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down on Sunday after a weekend in which numerous people died in Russian air strikes and Kyiv’s counterattacks, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced fresh changes to the government. Authorities have urged residents in Sumy to remain in shelters given the continued risk of further strikes. International Business Times
As of this week, no ceasefire or de-escalation agreement specific to the Sumy region has been announced, and officials say the city remains on alert for additional attacks in the days ahead.
