The search for 18-year-old football player Nolan Xavier Wells has ended after authorities discovered a body in the waters near Horn Island, Mississippi, where the teenager was last seen during a Fourth of July outing with friends.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter confirmed that a body was found around 8:45 a.m. on Monday, July 6, near the west end of Horn Island. Officials said the remains matched the description of Wells, although further identification procedures were expected to confirm the discovery.
Wells, a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, disappeared on Saturday after traveling by boat with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island located approximately 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
According to authorities and search organizers, Wells was last seen around 3 p.m. on the north side of the island while speaking with a girl. After that moment, friends and family were unable to contact him, and it remained unclear whether he ever returned to the mainland.
The disappearance sparked a large search effort involving multiple agencies and volunteers. The United Cajun Navy helped coordinate efforts, including aerial searches over the waters between Horn Island and nearby areas. The United States Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and local law enforcement agencies also assisted.

Before the discovery, Wells’ family had made emotional appeals for information. His mother, Christine Wonsley, shared photos of her son from the day he disappeared and asked anyone who had been near Horn Island to provide possible photos, videos, or details that could help investigators.
“His father, Elmore Wonsley and I are not ok,” she wrote in a social media post. “We have so many questions. Our hearts are breaking, we keep waiting for Nolan to walk through that door with his beautiful smile.”

Authorities described Wells as approximately 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue swim trunks, sunglasses, and no shirt. Photos shared by his family showed him smiling with friends on a boat during the holiday weekend before he went missing.
The case drew attention from the local community, with volunteers using boats, aircraft, and drones to search the surrounding waters. Search organizers thanked those who contributed resources and time during the effort.

At this stage, officials have not released details about how Wells died or whether foul play was involved. Investigators are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and the discovery of his body.
The death of Wells has left his family, teammates, and community mourning the loss of a young athlete whose future was still ahead of him.
