Ohio Family’s Relative Shares Heartfelt Message Amid Growing Backlash Following Shocking Case

Relative Speaks Out Amid Horror of Vinton County Child Endangerment Case

The shocking discovery of 16 children living in deplorable conditions in a Hamden, Ohio home has led to felony charges against four members of the Siders family. Now, a relative is speaking out, describing the allegations as “horrifying” and revealing the toll the case has taken on the extended family.

The Arrests and Charges

Gary Siders Sr., 73, and Christina “Lynn” Siders, 67, along with their son Gary “Bub” Siders Jr., 36, and his wife Elizabeth, 33, were arrested on June 30. Each faces 16 counts of second‑degree felony child endangerment. They pleaded not guilty at their arraignment on July 1.

Authorities described the home as a “third‑world scene,” with children confined to a 12‑by‑12 area, surrounded by human waste and bacteria. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said some of the children were in serious medical condition, with two flown to trauma centers.

Relative’s Reaction

Ronnie Fletcher, married to one of Gary Sr. and Christina’s daughters, said the extended family was blindsided by the arrests. “Horrified. Worried about the kids. It’s hard to explain the action when you’re distant family,” Fletcher told reporters. He emphasized that his wife and her sisters had no knowledge of the conditions inside the home.

Fletcher also revealed that since the arrests, relatives have faced death threats and harassment, forcing them to delete social media accounts and live in fear. “We’ve been told we need to be put in front of an execution line of guns… it’s been awful,” he said. His wife is now afraid to go to work, and Fletcher worries about starting a business amid the backlash.

Family History and Strain

Records show Gary Jr. and Elizabeth moved frequently across Ohio and West Virginia before settling in Hamden. Fletcher said Elizabeth had a troubled home life and “escaped” into the Siders household as a teenager. He added that while the family once appeared “normal,” health problems for Gary Sr. and Christina may have contributed to the decline.

Fletcher insisted the daughters raised outside the home are “successful members of society” and rejected rumors of generational abuse. “Gary and Lynn did not raise their children that way,” he said.

Impact on the Children

Officials described the children as “almost feral,” with some unable to speak or spell their names. Fletcher said he believed they were being homeschooled, though he now realizes that was not the case. He expressed a desire to help but admitted his family lacks the means to take in more children.

“Hang in there and stay strong and know that there’s distant family that does care,” Fletcher said in a message to the rescued children.

Community Response

A prayer vigil was scheduled at McArthur Freewill Baptist Church to support the children. Prosecutors emphasized that the case is an “intra‑family” matter, not human trafficking, and reassured residents that there is no wider threat to the community.
