For generations of children, Peter Cullen’s voice was more than a performance. It was part of growing up. Now, one of the most recognizable voices in animation has fallen silent.

Cullen, the legendary Canadian-American voice actor best known as Optimus Prime in Transformers and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, died at 85 on August 26, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. His agent confirmed his death, while his family said he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. A cause of death was not disclosed.

For fans who grew up in the 1980s, 1990s and beyond, Cullen’s passing represents the loss of a voice that seemed almost permanent. His deep, authoritative delivery gave Optimus Prime his strength, while his softer, melancholy performance as Eeyore created an entirely different character that became equally beloved.

The voice that became Optimus Prime

Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original The Transformers animated series in 1984.

His interpretation helped define the Autobot leader for generations. Optimus was powerful and commanding, but Cullen gave him something equally important: warmth and humanity.

The actor drew inspiration for the character from his older brother Larry Cullen, a Vietnam veteran. That personal connection helped shape the calm, controlled quality that became central to his performance.

When Optimus Prime died in the 1986 animated film The Transformers: The Movie, the reaction from young audiences was enormous. Cullen eventually returned to the character, and Optimus remained one of the defining roles of his career.

Decades later, Cullen was still the voice of the Autobot leader.

He returned for the live-action Transformers franchise beginning with the 2007 film, continuing through Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, The Last Knight, Bumblebee and 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Alongside the heroic Optimus Prime, he became the voice of Eeyore, the gloomy but lovable donkey from the Winnie the Pooh universe.

Cullen first began voicing Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, which ran from 1988 to 1991, and continued portraying the character in numerous later Winnie the Pooh projects.

For children, Optimus Prime and Eeyore could hardly have been more different. One was a heroic robot leading an army into battle; the other was a melancholy donkey constantly losing his tail.

Yet Cullen made both instantly recognizable.

The voice behind other childhood favorites

Cullen’s career stretched far beyond his two signature characters.

He voiced Monterey Jack in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider and worked on animated favorites including The Smurfs, G.I. Joe, DuckTales and Voltron.

He also provided the vocal effects for the creature in the original 1987 Predator and supplied the voice of King Kong in the 1976 remake.

These performances demonstrated why Cullen became such a respected figure in voice acting. He did not simply give characters dialogue. His voice could establish an entire personality.

His final chapter

Even in the final years of his career, Cullen continued working.

His most recent credited project was Prime Video’s Invincible, where he voiced Thaedus, the leader of the Coalition of Planets. Cullen’s work on the animated superhero series extended into 2026, giving fans one final opportunity to hear his unmistakable voice in a new role.

His late career also included his return as Optimus Prime in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, released in 2023, showing just how inseparable he remained from the character that had defined so much of his professional life.

In 2023, Cullen received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, recognizing a career that had touched generations of viewers.

A voice children never forgot

There are actors audiences remember because of a particular movie. There are singers remembered because of a particular song.

Peter Cullen was one of them.
