Jon Bon Jovi delivered a “Legendary” performance May 19 on the season finale of ABC’s “American Idol.”
Fans also heard a short backstory about his Las Vegas marriage.
Bon Jovi, sans his namesake band, sang the new single, “Legendary,” with the season’s three finalists: Abi Carter, Jack Blocker and Will Moseley. The Sayreville native, who’s recovering from vocal cord surgery, delivered the goods.
Carter, Blocker and Moseley, who sang “Livin’ on a Prayer” to open the show, joined in on the chorus of “Legendary.” Bon Jovi was later shown mentoring the contestants. He spoke to Moseley’s dad, who’s a big Bon Jovi fan, and implored the young singer to more passionately commit himself to the song “It’s My Life.”
“The second time through the song he understood what all this meant,” Bon Jovi said. “Now or never.”

“When they think of you enough to push you a little bit, it means so much more,” said Moseley of Bon Jovi’s advice.
Blocker sang the Bon Jovi 1988 hit “I’ll Be There for You,” and that led the rocker sharing a story about his marriage to fellow Sayreville native Dorothea Hurley.
“We were here in this town (Los Angeles) and I was playing three nights at the Forum and ‘I’ll Be There for You’ was the No. 1 single,” said Bon Jovi of the scene in 1989. “I opened up the curtains of my hotel room and there’s a billboard of the five of us staring back at me into the room and I looked at Dorothea and said, ‘Let’s go to Vegas and get married.’ So make it yours now and tell me your story.”
Bon Jovi and Hurley are still married with four children,
Carter sang “Bed of Roses,” and Bon Jovi suggested she develop her own interpretation of the song.
“My only advice I would give to you is stay true to who you are,” Bon Jovi said.
