The Voice viewers were shocked when this California singer’s cover of ‘Never Too Much’ sounded exactly like John Legend

It was a match made in groovy heaven when Kolby Cordell took the stage for his Blind Audition on Season 27 of The Voice. Cordell, who works for the forest service in Ontario, California, got all four of the Coaches in the mood to dance, but one in particular stood up to feel the music.

About Kolby Cordell’s Blind Audition on The Voice Season 27

For his Blind Audition, Cordell chose “Never Enough” by Luther Vandross. “The song is about operating on a level of love and expressing it with no limits,” said Cordell, who was thinking of his young son Karter during his performance.

His rendition got a chair turn from Coach John Legend, followed quickly by Michael Bublé, with Legend standing up in place to dance. “John is in heaven,” Kelsea Ballerini remarked to Adam Levine.

“You really made the song your own,” Legend told the singer, with Bublé adding, “My favorite part about you isn’t just your voice. It’s the fact that you come in here and you light the whole place up.” Though they didn’t turn their chairs, both Ballerini and Levine made it abundantly clear which way they thought Cordell should go. “I was watching John be at your concert…It was like kismet,” said Ballerini, with Levine adding, “Take your time [before you] choose John.”

The recommendations didn’t fall on deaf ears, with Cordell shouting out his pick of Coach: “John! Legend!”

Team Legend is all about inspiration

After choosing Legend, Cordell got one of the blue varsity jackets the “All of Me” singer has been gifting his Artists this season. The bold and stylish look establishes early on that Team Legend is there to compete. And their Coach is really there for them.

“I learn so much from being on this show. I learn from coaching,” Legend told NBC Insider in February 2024. “I learn from the interaction I have with these Artists, and it’s very renewing because, you know, I’ve been making records for, like, 20 years now, and to be around Artists that have that hunger and that excitement is very renewing for me, and I love that experience… The inspiration that I get from these Artists every single time is very renewing for me, and it doesn’t get old.”

Watch The Voice on Mondays at 8/7c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.
