Alex Eala delivered the biggest Wimbledon win of her young career on Saturday, stunning defending champion Iga Świątek to reach the fourth round and earn praise from one of her childhood heroes.
The 21 year old Filipina continued her breakthrough run at the All England Club with an impressive 7-6, 6-2 victory over Świątek on Centre Court. Entering the tournament, Eala had won just one main draw match at a Grand Slam, but she has now put together three straight victories to reach the last 16.
After edging a tense opening set, Eala took full control of the match, capitalizing on an unusually error filled performance from Świątek while producing fearless, aggressive tennis of her own.
Speaking after the upset, Eala admitted the moment meant everything to her.
“Of course this is one of the biggest matches of my life, for sure, and this is my dream court and I am really happy with the atmosphere you guys gave,” she said.
Soon after her victory, Eala received a message from someone she has admired since childhood, former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova left a short but meaningful comment beneath an Instagram post celebrating Eala’s win, writing simply, “A star!”

The praise carried extra significance because Eala has often spoken about how much Sharapova inspired her growing up.
Last year, she described the five time Grand Slam champion as her biggest idol.
“I looked up to so many players, but my super idol is Maria Sharapova,” Eala said. “The way she plays, her mentality, and the way she presented herself.”

She later expanded on that admiration during another interview, explaining that she loved everything about Sharapova’s competitive approach.
“Maria was my super idol growing up,” Eala said. “She was it. I loved the way she dressed, I loved the way she fought.”
Eala also revealed that she was fortunate enough to meet Sharapova when she was just five years old, even sharing a childhood photo of the pair together.
Another sporting icon from the Philippines also celebrated her victory. Manny Pacquiao reacted to the same Instagram post by commenting with a Philippine flag and raised hands emoji.
Eala’s remarkable Wimbledon run has included victories over Renata Zarazúa in the opening round, Maya Joint in the second round, and now Świątek in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
She will next face Jasmine Paolini for a place in the quarterfinals. The matchup could give Eala added confidence after she defeated the Italian 6-1, 7-6 earlier this year at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The winner of that match will move on to face either Ashlyn Krueger or Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals.
With several top contenders already eliminated, including Elena Rybakina, the bottom half of the draw has opened up dramatically, giving Eala a genuine opportunity to make an even deeper run at Wimbledon.
After knocking out the defending champion and earning recognition from her childhood idol, the rising Filipina has become one of the tournament’s biggest stories.
