A disturbing incident unfolded in Las Vegas over the weekend when multiple horses were injured during the National Barrel Horse Association Supershow at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded on Saturday, May 30, after reports surfaced that a horse had been stabbed inside the equestrian barns where competitors’ animals were being housed for the event.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered three horses suffering from injuries believed to have been caused by a sharp object. Police later identified a teenage girl as the primary suspect, alleging she may have used a knife to wound the animals multiple times.

The unnamed juvenile was eventually located at a nearby hotel, taken into custody, and booked into the Clark County Juvenile Hall. Investigators say she now faces 12 counts related to the willful or malicious killing, maiming, or torture of an animal, in addition to three felony counts tied to the destruction of private property exceeding $5,000 in value.
Thankfully, officials said the horses’ injuries were not considered life-threatening. However, the wounds are reportedly severe enough to prevent the animals from competing in the barrel racing event.

Teen suspect could be tried as an adult
After reviewing the case, prosecutors determined the allegations were serious enough to consider moving the case from juvenile court to adult court.
Steve Wolfson confirmed that the district attorney’s office believes the circumstances justify pursuing adult prosecution.
“These allegations involve deliberate acts of extreme cruelty against defenseless animals and have had a significant impact on the victims, the owners, and the broader equestrian community,” Wolfson said in a statement.

He also emphasized that animal cruelty offenses are treated with the utmost seriousness in Clark County, noting that Nevada law allows certain juvenile suspects to face adult charges when the alleged conduct is especially severe. According to Wolfson, prosecutors believe this case meets that threshold.
Supporters of the injured horses have since begun sharing ways people can donate to help cover veterinary care and recovery expenses.
