Bam Bam Brown Breaks His Silence About Matt Brown and Reveals a Side of His Brother We Never Saw on TV

The Alaskan Bush People family is facing a devastating loss after Matt Brown was reportedly found dead at the end of May 2026, bringing a tragic end to the life of one of the show’s original stars. Following the news, his brother Joshua “Bam Bam” Brown has spoken publicly, sharing an emotional message about Matt’s life, their complicated family history, and how they intend to remember him moving forward.

Reports first confirmed by TMZ stated that Matt Brown was reported missing by his family on May 27. Shortly after, there were unverified accounts suggesting that a body had been seen in the Okanogan River. Matt’s brother Bear Brown later shared on TikTok that their brother Noah had recovered Matt’s body from the river, also claiming there were signs suggesting he may have died by suicide. Authorities have not yet released an official coroner’s report.

Matt had been estranged from parts of his family for several years, largely due to his long struggle with addiction. During his time on Alaskan Bush People, he was often shown as the most independent and conflicted member of the Brown family, frequently clashing with Bam Bam Brown and choosing to step away from the group. He eventually left the series in 2019. The family had also previously endured the loss of their father, Billy Brown, who died in 2021.

In a heartfelt Instagram statement, Bam Bam Brown reflected on his brother’s life on behalf of the family, emphasizing that Matt was far more than what audiences saw on television. He described him as intelligent, curious, and deeply creative, with a strong connection to nature and a lifelong passion for learning.

“In loving memory of Matthew Brown,” the statement began. “To the world, Matt was one of the original faces of Alaskan Bush People, but to us, he was a son, brother, uncle, and friend who saw the world in a unique way.”

Bam Bam went on to highlight Matt’s many talents, including his skills as an outdoorsman, fisherman, and boatman, as well as his artistic side. He noted that Matt had an intense curiosity that led him to teach himself multiple languages and disciplines, including sign language, Spanish, Sanskrit, and ancient writing systems such as Egyptian hieroglyphs and petroglyphs.

The tribute also acknowledged Matt’s openness about his personal struggles during periods of recovery. Bam Bam shared that Matt had used his platform at times to speak honestly about addiction and mental health, hoping to support others facing similar challenges. He said the family experienced years of both hope and hardship as they supported him through recovery and setbacks.

Their father, Billy Brown, was also mentioned in the statement, with Bam Bam noting that he never stopped believing in Matt’s ability to heal despite the difficulties they faced as a family.

The message also addressed the more difficult chapters of Matt’s life, including past controversies and mistakes, without attempting to erase them. Bam Bam emphasized that while those moments were real, they did not define who Matt was as a person.

“His life included struggles and painful chapters,” the statement said. “But he was also kind, creative, and deeply loved. We will remember him for the light he brought into the world.”

Matt Brown had previously faced legal allegations in 2020, though prosecutors ultimately declined to move forward with charges.

His death comes amid ongoing discussion among fans about the future of Alaskan Bush People, which ended its original run in 2022 after 14 seasons. Since then, the Brown family has largely lived separate lives, away from the wilderness lifestyle that once defined them on screen.

The loss adds to a somber period in reality television, following other recent deaths within the broader Discovery network community.

Bam Bam Brown’s tribute ultimately paints a complex picture of his brother—someone shaped by talent, struggle, and creativity, whose life left a lasting impact on those who knew him both on and off camera.
