Just when pop culture thought Sir Cliff Richard had explored every possible sonic territory across his legendary career, the evergreen superstar has delivered a plot twist no one saw coming. At 86 years young, the legendary British hitmaker is officially chasing his fifth festive chart-topper—and he is doing it by diving headfirst into a genre he has never touched before: Reggae!
Taking to the stage during an intimate evening of songs and conversation at the Rose Theatre in Kingston-upon-Thames, West London, the pop icon stunned fans by revealing his latest studio secret—a reggae-infused adaptation of the famous biblical passage, The Lord Is My Shepherd.
Unlocking Reggae Rhythms with a Proven Hitmaker
To craft this unexpected festive anthem, Sir Cliff reunited with trusted songwriter Chris Eaton—the mastermind behind his iconic 1990 Christmas Number One, “Saviour’s Day”.
Speaking openly to the audience, the 86-year-old music royalty confessed that mastering the genre’s distinct syncopated bounce has been a delightful challenge: “I’ve never sung reggae before but Chris is really good at it. He’s phrased it like that, so I’m learning reggae. He’s written me number ones at Christmas and his new song is based on one of the psalms. I can’t sing it yet as I’ve not learnt it. But it goes, ‘The Lord Is My Shepherd . . .’ and it’s reggae.”
If the track reaches the top spot, it will cement Sir Cliff’s absolute dominance over the UK festive charts. Across his historic career, he has amassed 14 total UK Number One singles, including four coveted Christmas chart-toppers:
- 1960: “I Love You” (alongside his legendary backing band, The Shadows)
- 1988: The timeless holiday classic “Mistletoe And Wine”
- 1989: The star-studded charity anthem “Do They Know It’s Christmas” with Band Aid II
- 1990: The uplifting festive hit “Saviour’s Day”
Targeting an 8th Number One Album and Eyeing a Harry Styles Collaboration
The surprising reggae track isn’t the only major milestone on Sir Cliff’s horizon. The music powerhouse is also gearing up for the release of his 48th studio album, titled “Only Number Ones,” dropping on November 27. The project sees Sir Cliff delivering his own unique renditions of iconic chart-topping tracks throughout history—and he hopes it will earn him his 8th UK Number One album.

Among the standout tracks on the record is a cover of Harry Styles’s 2017 hit single, “Sign Of The Times.” Hilariously, Sir Cliff—whose real first name is also Harry—admitted that he originally fell in love with the melody before realizing who sang it! “I chose his song for the album because I love it. I didn’t know it was his,” Sir Cliff shared with a smile.
When asked whether he would ever consider joining forces with the 32-year-old former One Direction star for an official duet, the pop veteran enthusiastically opened the door to a generational team-up: “I was asked if I ever thought I’d do a duet with him. If he suggests something I’d be very happy to think about it.”

From reinventing biblical psalms with island beats to praising modern pop royalty, Sir Cliff Richard continues to show that age is merely a figure on a page when passion drives the music.
