Fans tuning in to the Season 29 Finale of The Voice on April 14 witnessed more than just a new champion being crowned — they were present for one of the most memorable musical moments in the show’s history.
Just a short time before Team Adam’s Alexia Jayy was crowned the winning Artist of The Voice: Battle of Champions, she joined her Coach Adam Levine on stage to sing the classic Maroon 5 hit, “Sunday Morning.” And talk about a concert-worthy performance.
Levine brought viewers back to 2002 as he took control of the iconic song’s opening verse, with the Maroon 5 frontman sounding as good as ever. Still, Levine’s silky-smooth vocals served as the ultimate lead-up for Jayy’s stunning voice to steal the show.
By the time the chorus rolled around, “Sunday Morning” was turned into a bona fide duet, with both stars delivering the familiar lyrics with so much passion. Of course, the singalong final refrain saw Levine and Jayy harmonize as if they’d been singing together for years.
The audience — as well as Kelly Clarkson and John Legend — gave the two a well-deserved standing ovation when the song ended.
Alexia Jayy moved all of The Voice Coaches to tears with her Season 29 Finale performance
For Jayy, it seemed like her fate as the eventual Season 29 winner was sealed after her final live performance during the April 14 episode. Dressed in a stunning white gown, the singer delivered a stunning rendition of “One and Only” by Adele — a song that is not only masterful in its structure, but known to be incredibly challenging to sing.
Clarkson was so moved by Jayy’s voice that she was brought to tears, as were her Coach and Legend.
“You are so good,” Clarkson told Jayy. “Wow, you’re like a vessel. Girl, that was so good, and you felt it … That was like a therapeutic release my heart needed, thank you. And, look, I love Adele, she’s one of my favorite singers, but damn!”
The performance was so good that she had to playfully warn Jayy in one of the episode’s best moments. “Just promise me this — never cover my songs,” Clarkson said.
So, what’s next for Jayy in the wake of her Voice victory? While she’s already released a new single titled “Rent Free,” she told NBC Insider that she has absolutely zero plans of slowing down.
“I’m just going to keep putting out more music. I am going to get on those big stages, as many as I possibly can, because I love what I do,” she said. “I’m going to just keep doing what I’ve been doing.
